Mayday Columbia
Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world to be a trade
unionist. With the election, in 2002, of President Alvaro Uribe
Velez, military tactics previously reserved for fighting guerrillas
are now being used against civilian opponents of the government's
privatisation programme.
This film follows a group of British trade unionists on a journey
to visit their Colombian counterparts which culminates in the traditional
celebration of May Day. The delegation includes Jeremy Dear, (General
Secretary of the NUJ) and Gerard Kelly (President of NATFHE). The
delegates heard claims that teachers and students, in particular,
have been targeted by both military and paramilitary forces for speaking
out against neo-liberal reforms.
This video was made for War on Want's Global Workplace Project,
which aims to educate workers in the UK about global labour and poverty
issues.
