Hell In The Pacific
British mining conglomerate RTZ’s Bougainville Island operations
came to an abrupt and bloody end in 1989. The islanders seized
control of Bougainville and closed the mine, demanding compensation
for the massive environmental damage which the company had caused
to the island.
‘Hell in the Pacific’ is the island story of the Bougainville
and Lihir islanders continuing resistance to the mining companies.
The film is an intimate account of the local people’s determination
to stand up against the world’s largest mining company in order
to preserve their culture and environment, despite the huge cost
in human life.
